Description|介绍
A late-Victorian vulcanite brooch, depicting a Maenad (follower of Bacchus).
During the late Victorian period, the connection between black jewelry and mourning became less prominent. Instead, materials like jet, onyx, and black glass were used to create fashionable accessories.
This brooch, made of vulcanite, also known as India rubber, was favored for its durability and easy to process compared to jet. The depicted woman on the brooch is a follower of the god Dionysus. Maenad, as they were known, were often portrayed as enthusiastic participants in Dionysus' revelries, adorned with crowns of foliage and vines.
